WordPress 3.7 Tightens Security

Version 3.7 of WordPress, named “Basie” in honor of Count Basie, is available for download or update in your WordPress dashboard.

WordPress 3.6 was just released in August, and we’ve already got WordPress 3.7, due in large part to a new plugin-first development cycle, which speeds up release dates considerably.

I like that this release is largely focused on security by making stronger passwords and incorporating auto-updates for WordPress core.

Better Passwords

We’ve seen a lot of sites hacked due in large part to poor passwords and lax security practices. WordPress 3.7 will help by making it easier to choose strong passwords by discouraging mistakes that people often make with passwords like:

  • using dictionary words
  • names
  • dates
  • keyboard patterns (qwerty)

Auto-Updates

Yep, that means that your main WordPress files can be kept up-to-date without any intervention on your part. Spiffy, right?

This is terrific because, despite a user’s best intentions, people often get distracted doing what they do and forget to keep WordPress updated, which can leave them vulnerable.

Thanks to the WordPress Core team for their outstanding work!
